The Google Search team announces new features for mastering STEM subjects

The Google Search team announces new features for mastering STEM subjects, Google Search has undergone several enhancements over the last few months, with the search giant focusing on protecting users’ privacy, the use of generative AI technology, and more. And to keep a healthy lead in the search market, Google has announced yet another set of new features purpose-built for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learners.

As described by Google

In its Keyword blog post, users will simply be able to type the equation into the Search bar or take a picture of the equation using Lens to see a step-by-step solution, thus eliminating the scenarios where you’re stuck with math problems for hours. If you’re on a desktop, you can also give this a try by typing “math solver” in Google Search. If you prefer to do it this way using your phone, be patient until Google makes it available for mobile users.

Besides math problems

Google Search is now equally good at helping you solve “word problems” from fundamental topics from high school Physics. All you have to do is type the problem in Search to get a guide on how to approach and solve it. This works on both desktop and mobile.

Moreover, Google has introduced support for 3D models in Search, with which it’s now possible to ‘explore interactive diagrams containing definitions and overviews for almost 1,000 biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy and related topics.’ In other words, you get a more immersive representation of STEM-related topics. One of the use cases is that when you can’t picture a biological structure in your mind, the 3D interactive diagram in Search will give a visual representation to help you understand it better. 3D models work on both mobile and desktops.

Unveiling the Math Solver Tool

At the heart of this digital evolution is the ‘math solver’ tool, which can break down equations and provide step-by-step solutions. Implemented within Google’s search bar and Lens tool, users can either type or take a snapshot of a math problem, and the tool will elucidate a comprehensive, detailed solution. This functionality, already launched on the desktop, will soon grace the mobile platform, enhancing accessibility and convenience.

Decoding Physics Problems

Google Search has widened its academic ambit to include physics word problems. When users input a physics question, the tool will identify known variables, highlight unknowns, and recommend relevant formulas to unravel the conundrum. Currently, this feature encompasses foundational high school physics topics and is slated to expand to more advanced university-level concepts.

The Power of AI

Powering these features is Google’s formidable AI technology, including PaLM (Pattern- and Language-model-based). This advanced AI capability allows Google to analyze and interpret equations, word problems, and visual images, providing precise solutions. The integration of AI in these tools offers a revolutionary approach to learning and problem-solving in the STEM landscape.

Overall, these enhancements to Google Search and Lens mark a significant advancement in STEM education. By leveraging AI and visual tools, Google is simplifying the understanding of complex concepts and facilitating solutions to challenging problems. With the potential to benefit students, educators, and anyone interested in exploring the world of STEM, Google continues to underline its commitment to improving search functionality and providing invaluable learning tools.

Interactive 3D Concept Diagrams

The digital giant has also launched interactive 3D concept diagrams encompassing diverse STEM subjects, from cell biology and anatomy to robotics and geology. Users can manipulate these models, by zooming, rotating, and clicking on labeled parts to access definitions and detailed explanations. This feature aims to enhance visual learning and foster a more profound understanding of complex scientific concepts.

The overarching objective of these updates is to facilitate a deeper comprehension of STEM-related topics. Google firmly believes that visualization is a crucial element in mastering these subjects. By offering step-by-step solutions, interactive diagrams, and 3D models, the company is striving to make STEM education more engaging and accessible.

Great news for STEM learners

All these Search updates are great news for STEM learners, even though there are already apps and software tools that serve similar purposes. The reason is simple: you don’t have to install a separate app on your device.
